This report is for discussion only. Sources are listed at the end and include podcasts from “market buddies” of the author and others. AIM&R databases, valuation and asset allocation models have been used as the backbone of this report. It is not a solicitation to short the hell out of the market. I may change my mind by the last page, although this is unlikely. But, if and when the facts change, I change. Note that it was largely written before the first round of the Brazilian elections. The election results and subsequent crash in Brazilian asset values make us even more positive and reinforces my significant overweight allocation to Brazilian assets.
The market is a pendulum that forever swings between unsustainable optimism, which makes stocks too expensive, and unjustified pessimism, which makes them too cheap. The intelligent investor is a realist who sells to optimists and buys from pessimists.”
My thesis is simple and is a “déjà vu” mixing the 1987 crash, the Japanese speculative run-up to its 1989 peak, the dotcom bubble and the GFC, all market events where I was in the front trading seats. The seeds of a culminating bubble were planted in 2020-21, around Covid. Meme stocks came first, then Bitcoin and MicroStrategy, the Metaverse, Cathie Wood and ARKK, the Magnificent Seven in 2022 and the SPACs. All of them collapsed in rolling liquidations (some have recovered since then, but that is irrelevant). Now we have AI, data centers in space and colonies on Mars and trillion-dollar IPOs of companies that will not make any money as far as the eyes can see.
The story could not get any better and is being delivered by the master storyteller (ooops, sorry “visionary”) of all time in the name of Elon Musk. Today, the S&P 500 stands at valuations exceeding 1929 or 2000, and is more concentrated than at any other time since the railways in the late 19th century (one of the biggest capex boom/bust in history), and while financed with record leverage as interest rates are zooming up.
